when educational leaders invested in the future generations by opening Pacific Beach Junior High School in 1931 on Tourmaline Street, on what is now Pacific Beach Elementary.

Students: 84. Faculty: 5.

Few streets were paved, even fewer had streetlights. Jackrabbits and coyotes roamed free. But the community of PB did have what they called a pleasure pier. Soon, investment in the curriculum included twice-weekly orchestra class. There were 4-H Club and boxing lessons, too. Just before the start of World War II and the population and building boom that followed, the school had grown to 280 students. By the start of the Korean War, PB Junior High was up to 885 students. In 1950 the junior high school swapped locations with the elementary school.

It is a testament to the unique character of the community that in a district that has for a century named its schools after inspiring leaders and heroes, Pacific Beach Middle remains one of the few schools named for where it is.
