Announcements

8th Grade Promotion: This year, 8th grade promotion will be both drive/walk thru and video. It is similar to the event we held last year but a bit more special. The decision to do this type of ceremony was difficult but ALL students can participate and ALL family members can attend or view the ceremony. Students and families are invited to campus on Friday, June 11 from 10:00am-1:00pm with a scheduled time. Students will receive their promotion certificate while walking across a stage or driving through the parking lot loop. There will be student and family photo opportunities and maybe a few surprises. On the last day of school (6/15) a promotion video will be posted in the 8th grade Google classroom with student and administrative speeches, teacher remarks and most importantly, our students. This slide deck LINK can be viewed for some details. More information will be released as we come closer to the event.

State Testing: The State of California is still monitoring the progress of our schools looking at performance data in English and mathematics, attendance data, discipline and social/emotional competencies. The math assessment, the District Essential Mathematics Indicators or DEMI, is a standards based assessment measuring critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. Students will be asked to apply their skills to solve problems and explain their thinking. Sixth grade students will take their test in English class. The rest of our students will take the test during math class. Students are testing in the one class they have had for the entire school year. The English test is called the FAST test. It is the English test all students have taken this year. Teachers gave it in the beginning of the year and now students will take it again to see progress. For more information, please view the following link: Testing Information

Community Service: If you have not submitted your service hours yet, there is still time. Community service hours are not required, just expected as part of the International Baccalaureate Programme: 10 hours - 6th grade; 15 hours - 7th grade; 20 hours - 8th grade. Students must be logged into their district Google account to access the form Community Service Form. We love to total up the service hours to see the impact PBMS students have on the San Diego community.

Cell Phones: Students can have cell phones on campus daily but they are only permitted to be out and on before school or after school. For the last 3 weeks, students have been reminded to put their cell phones away during the break. This week, we will begin confiscating phones. On the first offense, students can pick up their phone after school in the main office. If it happens again, PBMS will release the phone to a parent. Thank you for your help with this issue.

Math Practice: Are you concerned about your child not having math this quarter? PBMS recommends that your student engage in ST Math for Middle School for 30 minutes every day. It includes both on-grade-level and intervention content. With ST Math, students build a strong conceptual foundation and repair cracks and gaps in that foundation - correcting misconceptions so their future math learning can snap into place. To access the program, students log in to the Clever portal and click on the ST Math icon. Using ST Math at Home.
