Students in grades 6-8 will now have the opportunity to take part in organized team sports this fall, thanks to an expansion of the San Diego Unified School District's new middle school athletics program.
Earlier this year, San Diego Unified announced one of the biggest expansions of its athletics program with the launch of middle school soccer, bringing official district-managed sports to middle schools for the first time.
While sports clubs had previously existed at some individual schools, middle school athletes across the district now have access to qualified coaching and a chance to represent their community in competition against other schools.
Teams will play at their neighborhood high school athletic facilities, giving the young students a chance to establish a connection and familiarity with their future schools.
The district offers sports for fall, winter, and spring, including basketball, track, flag football, volleyball, and soccer.
